FY2017 Year in Review Statistics
In college, I hated statistics. I never could get my mind wrapped around it and it was probably due to the boring examples. Here I am to change things up a bit and make it more enjoyable! Taking a page from a friend, I want to share my FY2017 travel stats. There have been many trips spanning across three continents and several countries! I’ve taken flights, trains, buses, rental cars, and boats crossing three continents and many, even undocumented miles. I've been stuck in economy seats on a 9 hour flight to India versus a 14 hour luxurious business class flight from Abu Dubai. As for my various sleeping arrangements, I've slept at friend and family houses, mud huts, hostels, wooden huts, AirBnBs, and hotels. All these range from 19,000 feet in the Himalayan mountains to the beaches of France.Although I am quite organized, I will be using TripIt & Instagram to sort out the details. The service is great and organizes all trips as soon as they hit your inbox. In addition, they provide (sometimes late) travel alerts and keeps tracks of all points. Sadly, I forgot we began the year in Iceland although it feels like it was last year![divider class="" ]Countries: 15 for Mary Frances, 18 for AndrewWow! Surprisingly this statistic is probably one I did not expect. Although my calendar (and bank account!) has been fairly booked this year, I had forgotten all the countries we had visited in 2017. I am counting India and Canada despite them being layovers. If you have to go through customs late at night (3am India and 12am Canada), then you have been in those countries!Iceland, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, India, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Czech, Slovakia[divider class="" ]New Countries: 7 for Mary Frances, 10 for AndrewIceland, Cuba, India, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Wales, Scotland, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia[divider class="" ]Flights:As I mentioned above, my best flight was definitely the one I took in April returning from Dubai. I had 14 hours in business class from AUH to JFK and it was by far the best airplane experience I have ever had! Following close behind was the 10 hours in business class from Tampa to London (TPA - IAD - LHR) on United's new Dreamliner.Unfortunately, I had some travel mishaps. Nothing beats a 5 hour delay which meanings arriving at 4am on a Monday morning from Marseille (Thanks, EasyJet!). By far, the worst flight I had was New Delhi, India to Kathmandu, Nepal on Air India. The plane looked and felt like they had just nailed down the cardboard on the plane!Obviously, the most thrilling and terrifying flight was the flight in and out of Lukla, Nepal. Since it is the start of the Everest Base Camp trek, we had to go there. As I wanted to get off the mountain, it meant we had to get on the plane. When arriving, the pilot has to hit the runaway at the perfect moment in order to not crash into the mountain. During takeoff, it felt like the start of a roller coaster as we had to have enough energy to not drop completely off the mountain.
64 flights[divider class="" ]Trains: This does not include the many commuter trains into London or other cities in the U.K such as Oxford. I highly recommend train travel here in Europe! With the new security rules and oft delayed flights, it is incredibly nice to sit back on the train and just arrive at our destination without that much hassle.5 trains[video width="720" height="1280" mp4="https://www.theunchartered.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/IMG_0114.mp4"][/video] [divider class="" ]Buses:This statistical category will be the shortest, thankfully. I will always remember my first time on the Megabus from Atlanta to Nashville... I met some interesting people and heard many interesting stories! One busAndrew Only Statistics:[divider class="" ]Nights on the Road:If only I had stayed with one hotel program, I could have elite status! I figured this statistic was the going to the highest. Most of the travel included ~21 nights in Nepal (mud huts, wooden huts, and some hotel nights) and two weeks in a hotel in the U.K. when I first arrived.117 Nights plus 3 nights in planes (or airport)Best Hotel: KathmanduWorst ‘Hotel’: Goka Shep (Everest Base Camp trek)[divider class="" ]BONUS! Since I am a nerdy accountant and travel geek, I crunched the numbers and found these sad statistics...Miles Flown:50,500 milesJust find the interesting statistics below...Longest RT incl. segments: ATL - FRA - DEL - KTM - DXB - AUH - JFK - ATL 18,500 miles at 50 hours…Longest flight: AUH-> JFK 6,850 miles at 14 hoursLongest OW incl. segments + layovers: ATL - FRA - DEL - KTM 8,904 miles at 32 hours… That concludes my travel statistics for FY2017! If you have any questions or queries on how I booked any of these trips or how I stayed sane during my 32 hours to Nepal, please let me know. If you beat me in any of the categories, please share your stats and trips!
