Oh Cloudy Day
After a sweltering hot night in our cabin, I groggily welcomed the morning on Mljet. As soon as we stepped outside the cabin, I knew that today was just not going to be our day because the weather was cloudy. Initially, we had high hopes that the clouds would disappear with the sun slowly rising, but it was not for us today. Our freshly prepared breakfast was croissants with meats and cheese and a continental. It was tasty!
Our sailing was equally uneventful as the weather turned on us and the skies opened up. Rather than a super fun lunch and swim at a famous Rabbit Island (an island with rabbits..), we sailed straight for Korcula. Rainy and cloudy weather do not mix well with sailing!
Once we arrived at Korcula, we went to a nearby beach. I just relaxed on the pebbles while our friends played on the inflatable water park. Similar to the TV show Wipeout, their moves were hilarious and provided instant free entertainment!
Korcula
One of the biggest cities on the Croatian islands, Korcula is designed similar to a fishbone with a long main street in the middle with small alleys protruding. The design allows for breezes in the summer and warm protection in winter! In addition, this sleepy village is also “home” to Marco Polo, although Italy makes the same claim!
Find the Shady Alley
When we arrived to this wonderful city, the weather reversed and suddenly became absolutely perfect! Unfortunately, the sun also brought the heat so we played our favorite Mediterranean game - find the shaded street!
In this beautiful village, there are plenty of streets to find! With beautiful typical Mediterranean architecture and marble streets, we found it very easy to get lost - not to mention all the alleys began to look the same! At first, we began with a giant loop around the outside of the village. We then dove into the middle and fell for this amazing village.
Wine Not?
On our wanders, we stumbled upon a lovely wine bar, Boka, with views of the sea. Plus, the owner spoke wonderful English and actually said he missed Americans! We decided why not do a wine tasting?!
Because we know a decent amount about Croatian wines, we decided to do a red and white wine tasting.
Because we typically enjoy the Croatian reds, we were pleasantly surprised with the white wine. On Korcula, there is a grape variety that is only grown here called Grka that makes a fantastic wine. Out of the white wines, we definitely enjoyed the Grka wine. For the reds, how could we not place the Dingac as our favorite! The smells instantly reminded us of our 2018 wine trip and Mary Frances was in heaven!
Typical Light Dinner
Throughout our wine tastings, our eyes (and mouths) began to wander to the meat and cheese platter on the menu. Eventually, we decided we would have a really light and easy meal of great Croatian meat and cheeses! The platter was… wonderful! The black pig salami is locally sourced according to the owner and the meat fell apart in our mouth. Combined with the cow cheese, the salami was the best part!
Because we bought the delicious meat and cheese platter, we obviously had to try more Croatian wine! In the reds, the wine bar has 3 Dingac and 2 Postup brands available so we tried all of them! The owner found us to be amusing and passionately explained each glass. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal!
The UnChartered Summary
We enjoyed getting lost on the marble alleys as we explored Marco Polo’s birthplace! From tasty wines and food to the amazing views throughout the village, Korcula is an instant favorite in the Adriatic Sea.
- In our opinion, the top activity is wandering through the city! Between sea views or “city” views, the alleys and streets offer fantastic views.
- Try some of the “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants whether they are on the sea or tucked in an alley! There are so many great choices here and we enjoyed an undiscovered gem that we didn't expect in Boka Bar!
- Korcula is a must-see on any Croatian sailing trip! The town is very charming. We wish we had 1-2 more days, but the town is just a little too remote for our return trip back to Dubrovnik.
