Activity Review: Caving in Slovenia's Postojna Caves

One of the country’s largest tourist attractions, the Postojna Caves are an underground wonder world! Discovered long ago, the caves gained popularity after WW2. With loads of caverns, crystals, and unique formations, the caves are a perfect road trip break or rainy day activity! Otherwise, we probably wouldn’t have visited!

Read about how we planned for our Slovenia trip, including our wine visit to Bdra and seaside visit to Piran!

How to Buy Tickets

While we could have purchased tickets online, we had no issues buying tickets at the door. The ticket office is located at the beginning of the tourist shopping mall rather than by the cave entrance. Tickets are issued for entry every 30 minutes and are organized by language. While we were tempted for the Slovenian guide, we went with English instead.

The Experience

To begin our Postojna Caves experience, we hopped on a train that whisked down into the underworld for over 2km. While the outside was warm, the further inside the train went and it was cold! Thankfully we would be walking around this underworld wonderland.

WOO!!

For our walk, we explored the finest parts of the caves. Throughout our 1km walk, we discovered the amazing caves and all its beauty. It is truly a miracle that these caves exist! I would normally say that pictures here are worth a thousand words, but I am not sure if you can see or fully appreciate them in the dark!

In this underworld, there is a perfectly built bridge. During WW1, Russian POWs built a bridge because the locals were afraid of venturing this deep and for long enough to build a bridge. Thus, the bride is now known as the Russian Bridge!

Grand Sights

Similar to all attractions, there are unique sights - otherwise we wouldn’t be here! First, we saw what they call the grand mountain. Although we are still underground, there were still rock mountains formed through the generations! Next, we wandered through the beautiful cave system. The caves had been here for centuries and never been discovered but I could tell they had certainly explored every nook and cranny!

One of our last grand sights was the concert hall. Occasionally, they do have concerts in these caves! As the name describes, the area is very large and produces a concert hall effect. In the end, it is all remarkable.

Perfect Postcard

At the very end of the walking tour, we went to the most famous section of the caves. Originally the biggest draw of the caves, the gothic cathedral and the ice cream cone although the name is my own! I am not sure how these are the most famous formations in the caves, but at least we got the perfect postcard now!

Bye!

The UnChartered Summary

While we initially chose Postojna Caves because it would be a great indoors and rainy day activity, the caving experience was certainly one to remember! I even saw an ice cream cone!

  • Because it is a popular tourist attraction, be mindful if you need to buy tickets online.
  • Bring a jacket because the underground is actually very cool!
  • Get your ice cream cone while you can!
