Visiting Castle Combe

Just crossing the street!

Hidden in the beautiful Cotswolds, Castle Combe dates back to the ancient Roman times. Unchanged by modern ways, the beautiful village consists of one road, many stone-walled cottages, and a few cafes!

Unique FarmStay AirBnB

Because we were on the way to Cornwall, I wanted a hotel in the middle of our road trip. Thus, I landed on the beautiful city of Bath for both our outgoing and return trip! After digging through AirBnB, I found an unique B&B farmstay just outside Bath in a small village of Nettleton.

Built on the Fosse Way, the house dates back to 1372 and certain has seen a lot of history along the historic Roman road. Fosse Way use to connect most of England so I was very excited as a history nerd!

Because the house is mostly unchanged since 1372, we initially spent time ducking in and out of the rooms. It was so cool! Our room was located upstairs and included many usually placed stairs! Our bed and room was very comfy and warm!

Exploring Castle Combe

From our AirBnB, we wanted to explore Castle Combe before setting off to Cornwall!

The Full English

Because we had a long day both driving and exploring Cornwall, we were up early for breakfast at 8am and I ordered a full English breakfast from Jane. While I do miss the American breakfast foods, the English certainly know how to do one thing well - the full english! I had scrambled eggs, beans, toast, tomatoes, bacon and sausage. Our breakfast was extremely tasty!! Great start to the day!

Whilst she was cooking, she told us about her little farm. Originally a traditional cow farm, she converted it to just her personal stables as cows were a lot of work. Nowadays, she has 2 houses, 5 hens, 3 lovely dogs, several barn cats, some sheep, and loads of garden space!

After breakfast, we went on a short tour of the farm. It was quite lovely seeing the peaceful farm on a beautiful Friday morning. The horses were so kind and friendly! As we went along, the dogs, 2 labs and a terrier names Lily, Teale, and Jasper, kept following us and making us wish we had a dog!

Castle Combe

Because we had an early start to our day, we arrived in Castle Combe before the crowds or anyone woke up! Thus, we had a fantastic photo opportunity!

We strolled through the very tiny village taking many, many photos! Both MF and I truly loved this very beautiful and quaint village.

There are a few boutique hotels and cafes in the village if we wanted tea or snacks but I can imagine it is very busy when the crowds arrive! In all honesty, Castle Combe is a well known, yet hidden gem in England’s Cotswolds!

As we were walking back to the car, the first of three tour buses drove by to likely stop in the village. Thank goodness we were early!

Pro Tip: Parking in the village can be difficult as there are about 5 spaces in the village but there is a parking lot located almost a mile away. Because we were doing a quick stop, we nabbed a parking spot!

The UnChartered Summary

Castle Combe

  • I highly recommend Jane’s AirBnB in Nettleton, just outside Castle Combe and Bath. From the kind English hospitality to the quaint charm of a Roman house, we really enjoyed our stay!
  • It goes without saying that the early bird gets the worm and this is especially true in Castle Combe. For the perfect postcard photo of the village without any crowds, you will need to arrive early!
  • Although Castle Combe is slightly out of the way, it is well worth a visit!
